Is Building a Green Home Worth It?

More than one pundit has observed that green is the new black. Everything from the foods in your refrigerator to the home you live in can come with a green certification. But, is building a green home worth the hype? As it turns out, green buildings have a number of advantages over conventional construction:

  • Green buildings are more energy efficient, which means they save you money. A traditionally constructed house will lose between 15 and 20% of air-conditioning and heating, which means you are paying for resources you aren't using. Green houses are better insulated, and designed to optimize natural conditions. So, you rely less on your heater and air conditioner and spend less money to stay comfortable. In fact, with proper design, your home can run with zero additional power generated outside the home.
  • Green homes are better for the environment. The materials used in construction are often recycled or otherwise sustainably sourced, so, the impact on the environment is reduced. Plus, using less energy means reducing your home's contribution to pollution like that caused both coal and nuclear power.
  • Green houses are healthier for you and your family. Materials used in conventional homes can leach toxic substances into the air you and your family breathe. For instance, conventional carpet and paint can release chemicals when they are new. By contrast, low emission green materials can be chosen which will keep your air quality high.
  • Green homes have a higher resale value. Although you will likely pay your builder more during construction, this money can be made back if you ever sell your home. Custom green features are attractive to many buyers and thus significantly increase the value of your home.
  • Green construction can be beautiful. For many years, people associated green building with roofs covered with clunky solar panels. Newer designs better incorporate aesthetic ideals.
