Stirling Commons Commercial Remodel
Stirling Commons, once a blight to downtown Dunedin, it is now a thriving, mixed use building with a variety of retail shops, restaurants, and the Stirling Campus of the prestigious Dunedin Fine Arts Center.
Despite the current economic downturn, all available space was leased before construction was completed. Stirling Commons arose from essentially what was an old gymnasium that had become an eyesore. Many wanted it demolished. J. W. Smith Design Group immediately saw the potential of the site and chose to use the main structure as inspiration and decided against demolition, saving a substantial amount of cost and natural resources. From the beginning, the owners were concerned with the environmental impact of the project and LEED certification was always considered.
Stirling Commons and the adjacent Dicus Building have become a destination on Broadway and have brought activity to the many area shops. In its first year open, Stirling Commons has hosted several open-air festivals dovetailing with the festive family atmosphere of Downtown Dunedin.
